Trading psychology: FOMO, revenge and discipline
Most losses come from breaking your own rules. Know the loop and build guardrails.
What it is
The market does not hurt traders as much as their reactions to it. FOMO makes you chase. Revenge trading makes you increase size after a loss. Overconfidence after a win makes you skip your checklist. Each one leads to larger losses and the loop repeats.
Guardrails beat willpower: fixed risk, daily loss limits, a written plan, and a pause rule after losses.
How to use it
- Write your rules before the session.
- Use fixed risk and a daily loss limit.
- Take a mandatory break after two consecutive losses.
- Review emotions in your journal.
Rules before emotions.
Common mistakes
- Trading to recover a loss.
- Taking setups outside the plan because “this one is different”.
- Checking P&L every minute.
