What it is

In futures, exchanges forcibly close positions that run out of margin. Clusters of liquidations create bursts of market orders that can accelerate a move (a cascade). The funding rate is a periodic payment between longs and shorts; strongly positive funding shows crowded longs.

Extreme funding plus stalling price is a warning that a squeeze may be near, but timing still needs price confirmation.

How to use it

  1. Watch the liquidation feed for bursts.
  2. Check funding for extremes on the coin you trade.
  3. After a cascade, look for exhaustion (volume spike, reversal candle) at a level.
  4. Avoid trading into the middle of a cascade.
Forced orders move price fast; wait for exhaustion.

Common mistakes

  • Fading a cascade too early.
  • Treating funding as a timing tool.
  • Ignoring open interest changes.
